Meren kasvojen edessä is a Finnish silent film made in 1926, directed and written by Teuvo Puro, the then chief director of the National Theatre. The film is an exciting adventure story about three young men who, on their summer sailing trip, end up on the mysterious Hylkysaari. On the island, the boys get to know the local inhabitants, and the secrets of the inhabitants are gradually revealed to visitors in this exciting film. Meren kasvojen edessä was a very popular film at the time, and it was also sold to Sweden, Norway and Denmark.
The performance you will hear now adds a whole new dimension to the film, as the 13-piece Ostrobothnia Rhythm Orchestra will perform the music of composer Jussi Lampela live together with the film. Lampela originally composed the music for the film in 2014, for a smaller ensemble at the time, together with trumpeter Verneri Pohjola. The Ostrobothnia Rhythm Orchestra is an orchestra of influential professional musicians in the Ostrobothnia region, whose purpose is to highlight musicians and composers living specifically in the province. The orchestra has been operating since 2020.
