The sound of jazz is heard from the clubs of Copenhagen, we are living in the 1930s between the wars. Maren, a girl from a poor family, feels life pulsating in her veins, but the young woman’s thirst for life is too much for society. Maren is labeled as having bad manners and is placed on the island of Sprogø in an institution intended for mentally weak and socially maladjusted women. On the island, Maren forms a friendship with her sister Sørine, and the women begin to rebel – with far-reaching and fatal consequences.
Malou Reymann’s powerful drama film describes the song’s dark Danish history and how society betrayed the untamed women of the time.
