Oscar winner: Best international feature film (Brasil).
Rio de Janeiro, early 1970s. A military dictatorship is tightening its grip on Brazil, and political opponents are being watched and persecuted. Former congressman Rubens Paiva lives with his wife Eunice and their five children near a beautiful sandy beach. One day, armed men march in and take away first the father of the family, then Eunice and their daughter Eliana for questioning. The most brutal means of oppression, to crush the resistance, are the disappearances of people that break families and minds.
Award-winning director Walter Salles’s (The Motorcycle Diaries, Central Station) touching yet joyful I’m Still Here (Ainda Estou Aqui) has won, among other awards, the Best Screenplay award at the Venice Film Festival, and Fernanda Torres, who plays the mother of the family, Eunice, has won a Golden Globe for her role.
