The melodrama Bitter Christmas (Amarga Navidad) by legendary Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar tells the story of a filmmaker struggling with a creative crisis, who draws on the tragedies of those close to him for material for his work. At the heart of the film is Elsa, a commercial photographer who works non-stop and does not allow herself time to mourn her mother’s death. She sets off for Lanzarote with a friend, as both are longing for a break from everyday life. Running parallel to the women’s story is the tale of a filmmaker who explores how inextricably real life and fiction can become intertwined, and how the experiences of loved ones can be transformed into art – sometimes in a deeply unsettling way.
